Reader Service
Reader Service is a recording service for textbooks provided
by ASU Disability Services through
RFB&D (Recording For the Blind and
Dyslexic).
RFB&D is a national nonprofit organization serving
people who cannot read standard print because of a visual,
perceptual or other
physical disability.
Who is eligible?
Students
who are Blind or visually impaired and Students with Learning Disabilities who are registered with Disability
Services.
What can be recorded?
Textbooks for your class. Disability services recommends students to become a member
of RFB&D. By becoming a member of RFB&D, students will be able to
acquire limitless materials on tapes, and not only textbooks. Disability
services only provides a student textbooks on tapes for classes that the student
is currently attending. To ensure a timely manner in receiving books on tape for
class, DS recommend students to contact DS office as soon as two weeks before
the beginning of the semester.
What happens if the tape a student requested
is not
available?
Disability Services will provide the textbook(s) in
electronic text format which can be read by a computer using a reading program.
What should I do with the tape that I no
longer need?
The books on tapes are given to Disability Services by RFB&D on loan
basis. Students are expected to return the tapes they loan as soon as they are
finished with them. A student can keep a set of tapes for as long as one
semester.
