 Frequently Asked Questions

1.  What do I need to do to obtain services?

Answer: a) Have a documented or established disability.  If you do not have your documentation handy, you can request a letter from your doctor or have your doctor complete a Client Information Form.  This form is available at http://disability.astate.edu/resources.html .

                 b) Complete the registration process in the Disability Services Office.  The registration form can be downloaded online at http://disability.astate.edu/resources.html .

                c) Submit the registration for services and the documentation of a disability to Disability Services (DS).

                d) Obtain an Accommodation Card from Disability Services.

2.  I haven't been diagnosed; I don't know if I have a disability; I want to get tested for a learning disability, how do I do that?

Answer:  Contact Disability Services for a consultation and counseling.

3.  Do you provide tutoring services for students?

Answer:  DS does not have a tutoring program; however, DS has a list of organizations and labs that offer tutoring.

4.  I have difficulty walking and have to use crutches this semester.  How do I get on the Transportation Program?

Answer: a) Complete the Transportation program application

                 b) Eligibility is determined by the severity and duration of the students disability.

                 c) Due to a lack of staffing, a limited amount of persons will be allowed into the program.

5.  How do I get an interpreter?

Answer: Contact Disability Services and speak with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Coordinator, Ms. Kelly McCoy.

6.  Are there any scholarships for students with disabilities?

Answer: Yes, contact Disability Services around the end of January each year.  Ms. Kelly McCoy is the contact person for scholarships and resources.

7.  What is Notetaking Services?

Answer: Student volunteers share their lecture notes with students and assist students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, visually impaired, learning disabilities, ADD, ADHD, and physical disabilities.

8.  Where can I park if I have disability parking?

Answer: Contact Disability Services for a chart of locations of disability parking spaces.  Contact Ms. Vaneta Harvey and you will need:  ASU hangtag, state revenue Disability Parking Placard and regulation papers.

9.  What should I do if I have a temporary impairment and need disability parking?

Answer: You will need to contact Ms. Vaneta Harvey and bring your State Placard/ Registration, Disabled Person's Access to Parking Application, and ASU Parking Hangtag to Disability Services.

10.  Where can visitors with state disability parking, park on campus?

Answer: Visitors with state disability parking can park in the spaces marked disability spaces on any level of the parking garage free of charge.

11.  What is the Technology Fair?

Answer: Disability Services holds a Technology Fair every other year to showcase technologies used by students and technologies useful for persons with disabilities.  More information about  the Technology Fair can be found through this link: http://disability.astate.edu/fair.html .

12.  What are web accessibility guidelines?

Answer: Recommendations to web authors on how to create accessible web content.

13.  Do I need to make my website accessible?

Answer:  Yes. All ASU websites including faculty members websites for their classes need to be accessible.  For help in making websites more accessible, contact Disability Services.

14.  I would like to be active in the community and would like to join an organization.

Answer:  Delta Sigma Omicron is a student organization sponsored by Disability Services.  To view more information about DSO, please visit their website at:  http://disability.astate.edu/delta.html .  Also there are Volunteers in Action, Notetaking, Campus Guides, and Study Services.

15.  I would like to use audio tapes for my books.  How do I request the service?

Answer:  a) Notify your DS Counselor to request audio books.

                  b) Submit your class schedule and title, author, edition and the ISBN of the books as soon as possible.

                  c) Pick up the audio books and the audio books player.

                  d) Return the audio books and the player to Disability Services at the end of the semester.

16.  What is Assistive Technology?

Answer:  Assistive Technology is any item, piece of equipment or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.  Disability Services has software and devices available for students to use.  The software is available in several computer labs across campus.  Some of devices are available to check out to qualified students.  Check with Disability Services regarding  specific Assistive Technology you like to use.

17. I am registered with Disability Services. How do I receive any services for this semester?

Answer: Students are required to contact Disability Services at the beginning of the fall term each year. The student is responsible for picking up their accommodation card. If a problem arises, the student should contact DS immediately to resolve the problem.
