Opportunities to Earn a Substantial Salary  

Presenter: Bernie Quell, EmployAbility Project.

-This interactive presentation will highlight the Working Disabled Medicaid program which allows eligible working individuals with a disability the benefit of Medicaid, and the opportunity to earn a substantial salary. It will provide information on work incentives for Social Security beneficiaries.

Iraqi Veteran’s Compelling Story of Struggles and Triumph  

Presenter: Anthony Smith, Retired U.S. Army Major. Sponsored by Delta Sigma Omicron (DSO)

- Wounded by a rocket-propelled grenade and flat-lined by the time the medics reached him, this ex-Army Major beat all of the odds and has a compelling story of courage and trials to share. His struggles and successes are an inspiration to all!

Craighead County Transition Fair

Presenter: Dr. Jenifer Rice-Mason, Transitioning to college life.

- Morning Session: 8:30, JHS Auditorium. Several representatives from post-secondary schools and agencies will give short presentations to explain what the agency has to offer students with disabilities.

- Evening Session: 6:30-8:30, JHS Cafeteria. A chili dinner will be served and child care provided.

Students and parents will have an opportunity to visit with agencies to gain information about jobs, training opportunities, and services available in the community. Drawings for door prizes will be held at the end of the evening.

The Miracles Performance and Symposium

-The Miracles, a group of musically-gifted adults, live at The Baddour Center in Senatobia, MS. The

center is a residential community that is designed for adults with intellectual disabilities. The choir travels extensively performing 30 weekends out of the year. They have performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.  They have also performed at the White House.

Strategic Planning, Organization, and Techniques to Enhance Academic Success at ASU

Presenter: Ms. Kelly McCoy

- This workshop will focus on different study strategies such as preparing to study, notebook organization, reading skills, taking class notes, class preparation and strategies for test taking. The techniques covered, when implemented appropriately, have helped students raise their grades significantly. All students, faculty and staff are

welcome to attend this workshop. Students using these methods will share success stories.

military service goals.

Alternative Testing:  What You Should Know….

Presenter: Ms. Sondra Sims

- This is an interactive workshop focusing on alternative testing and accommodations for students with disabilities, encouraging new faculty, and students from various majors. During this one hour workshop, participants will interact during discussions and scenarios to learn techniques to utilize testing services and to best accommodate students with disabilities.

Disability Awareness Week 2006

March 13-17, 2006

Watch Us “C.O.P.E.” – Contribute, Overachieve, Progress, and Empower.

 

ASU Disability Services will sponsor various events during the week to promote disability awareness in the community. Everyone is invited.

 

Dynavox “Technology For Human Expressions” workshop will be presented by Kay Wilcox Smith, M.S., OTR/L, on Monday, March 13, 2006 from 1:00 - 2 :00 p.m. in the Pine Tree Room, 3rd floor of the Student Union.

Ms. Smith will provide information on innovative augmentative and alternative communication devices, advanced voice output devices, funding sources for high-end devices, the evaluation process and the therapists role. Dynavox Flyers

 

Disability Awareness Exhibit Fair will be held on Tuesday, March 14 from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on the upper and lower lobby of the Dean B. Ellis Library (in front of the Graduate School).

We would like to invite students, faculty, and staff to attend the Exhibit Fair. Exhibits will include accomplishments of people with disabilities in different fields, facts about people with disabilities, disability issues concerning programs and services available.

 

Food Drive Challenge will be held on Wednesday, March 15 from 10:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the Student Union Courtyard.

Delta Sigma Omicron is challenging each individual, department, and all organizations on campus to donate canned food for The Salvation Army shelter. Trophies will go to the top three organizations/departments/individuals that contribute the most donations. All organizations & departments who participate will receive a Certificate of Appreciation. The Student Forum will be held on Wednesday, March 15 and Thursday, March 16 from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m.

It will be held in the Mockingbird Room, Student Union 314.

The Student Forum provides a venue for students with disabilities to discuss challenges college life presents.  Faculty, staff, and students will have the opportunity to learn about experiences and abilities of individuals with disabilities.  The students will share insights of their lives and unique ways to deal with obstacles. Project A.I.M (Advocacy in Motion) will be held on Wednesday, March 15 and Thursday, March 16, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the Pine Tree Room, 3rd floor of the Student Center.

The major function of this workshop is to provide students with disabilities information that will increase their ability and willingness to advocate for themselves.  Students with disabilities encounter many different challenges in their everyday lives.  We seek to improve their decision making abilities when it comes to handling these situations as well as presenting appeals, encountering professors/administrators, knowing their rights, and excelling in school.

 

Creating an Accessible Website will be held on Wednesday, April 12 from 2:00 – 4:30 p.m. in the CLT Computer Lab, Library 301.

The workshop will cover web accessibility guidelines and techniques to create an accessible website, background on web accessibility, hands-on techniques using Microsoft Front Page and HTML, testing and repairing your website for accessibility.  Disability Awareness Week 2005 Pictures

 March 7-10, 2005

Several disability awareness activities and events will be geared to ASU students, staff and faculty members.  Representatives from public and private agencies, organizations, and other educators from the community are invited to attend.  Student groups, classes, and departmental organizations may attend as well; however, in order to ensure that appropriate accommodations can be made we encourage you to notify Disability Services (972-3964) in advance.   ASU sponsors of the disability awareness activities for the month of March include Disability Services, Health, Physical Education, and Sports Science and the Department of Rehabilitation Counseling.  Faculty and staff are encouraged to either participate by encouraging students to attend, participate and/or present papers/workshops during the symposium.

 We would like to encourage students to be involved during the month of March by sharing their experience through assignments in writing, marketing, radio and TV, journalism, photography, presentations, public administration, physical therapy, computer technology, etc.   Students may want to participate by attending/participating in the wheelchair basketball game, a student forum, an art display entitled “Access for Everyone”, workshops and/or one or more of the symposiums. Students with and without disabilities are encouraged to attend or participate in the fun and educational programs centered around the theme entitled: Widening the Umbrella Access for Everyone Everywhere.

Other events will be held throughout the month of March including workshops for service providers working with deaf and hard of hearing students and pertinent information will be provided for those wanting to volunteer on a regular basis.

Departments submitting exhibits were Financial Aid (1st place winner), Communication Disorder (2nd place winner), Student Support Services (3rd place winner), Residence Life, Career Services, Department of Psychology and Counseling, and Ms. Sadie Ivy (ASU Art Student).

The Student Forum was held on March 10 at the Wesley Foundation. The students were involved in a very informative group discussion focusing on disability issues. Panel members were Sadie Ivy, Bryan Rougley, Shelby Vincent, Elissa New, Tommy Wallin, Chiquita Holt and Chris Suttles.

Mr. Sam Whittle, a Gallaudet college graduate, shared his experiences growing up as a deaf child in a hearing culture. He also discussed the use of sign language interpreters in an educational setting.

Dr. Joseph Justen of ASU Special Education covered the diagnosis of LD, ADD, and TBI and how we identify the disabilities.

The Student Forum provides a venue for students with disabilities to discuss with others the challenges college life presents.  Faculty, staff, and students have the opportunity to learn about experiences and abilities of people with disabilities. The students with disabilities share insights of their lives and ways they deal with obstacles. This occasion allows one to understand humanity in a new light. 

The purpose of this forum is to promote interaction between students with disabilities and their peers, which enhances a positive awareness of disability issues and concerns. Our goal is to create a comfortable environment of acceptance for students with a disability, their peers, and faculty members.

Mr. John Halloran of Prentke Romich focused on Turning Challenges into Talent during the luncheon. The goal was to motivate professionals to celebrate and nurture the unique characteristics of individuals with disabilities so they can use their differences to their advantage in all areas of life
